7 Years at eXp Realty: Why I Turned Down a 7-Figure Offer to Leave

July marks seven years since I made one of the biggest business decisions of my career. I was offered seven figures to move my business back to Keller Williams. I turned it down. Here's why.

July marks seven years since I made one of the biggest business decisions of my career.

After spending nearly 12 years at Keller Williams, I made the move to eXp Realty in July of 2019.

Looking back today, I can confidently say it was one of the best business decisions I've ever made.

In fact, I was offered seven figures to move my business back to Keller Williams. I turned it down.

That's how strongly I believe in what eXp Realty has built.

If you're a real estate agent researching whether eXp Realty is worth it, looking for an eXp Realty sponsor in Texas, or trying to decide between eXp and another brokerage, I want to share my honest experience after seven years inside the company.

Why I Left Keller Williams After 12 Years

I joined Keller Williams in December of 2007.

I learned a lot there and built relationships that still matter to me today. The business was growing. Our team was growing. We were comfortable.

There wasn't some dramatic event that caused me to leave.

The biggest reason I made the move was simple: I wanted to create more opportunities for my agents.

At Keller Williams, I couldn't offer stock ownership opportunities to my agents. I couldn't offer the same level of revenue share opportunities either. When I saw what eXp Realty was building, I realized it created a path for agents to build wealth beyond commissions.

That got my attention.

My Biggest Concerns Before Joining eXp Realty

Like many agents, I had concerns.

I was told repeatedly that the revenue share model wouldn't work. I heard people say eXp would eventually go out of business. Others told me production would suffer because everyone would be too focused on recruiting agents.

Honestly, those concerns almost stopped me from making the move. After all, we were doing well. Why leave something comfortable?

Looking back, I'm glad I didn't let fear make the decision.

What Happened After Joining eXp Realty

When we joined eXp Realty, approximately 11 agents came with us.

Today, The Good Home Team powered by PLACE has grown to nearly 40 agent partners. Our annual production consistently hovers between $65 million and $70 million.

One of the biggest myths I heard was that production would decline because agents would focus on recruiting. My experience has been the exact opposite.

The agents who grow the most at eXp are usually the agents who are already producing, learning, building systems, and helping others grow.

The brokerage's motto is: "Where the Pros Go to Grow."

After seven years, I understand exactly why.

The eXp Support System Most People Never Experience

One of the most underrated parts of eXp Realty is the support.

The brokers are accessible. The training opportunities are extensive. The collaboration is incredible. The resources available to agents today are better than anything I've experienced in my career.

What surprises me is how many agents never fully plug into what's available.

Many agents who struggle at eXp never take advantage of the training, mentorship, coaching, masterminds, broker support, and collaboration opportunities available to them.

The opportunities are there. You have to engage with them.

How eXp Stock Helped Me Buy a Rental Property With Cash

One of my favorite personal examples happened in 2024.

I was on a listing appointment in The Colony, Texas. The homeowner had lost his job and needed to sell quickly. I walked him through my listing presentation and showed him how we could market the property and maximize the sale price. But speed mattered more than price. He wanted a cash offer and wanted to be done with the property so he could move back to Massachusetts.

I told him I could make that happen.

Because of the stock I had accumulated through eXp Realty, I was able to sell shares, purchase the property all cash, and close in approximately two weeks.

Today, that property has appreciated by roughly $80,000 and rents for approximately $2,400 per month.

That's a real-world example of how stock ownership can create opportunities many agents never consider.

Why I Believe More Agents Should Understand Revenue Share

The revenue share model is something I'm becoming increasingly passionate about.

Not because it's recruiting. Because it's leverage.

Most real estate agents rely on one income source: commissions. If you stop selling, the income stops.

Revenue share creates another stream of income. I've seen agents use it to supplement slower months. I've seen agents create additional financial security. I've seen agents build six-figure annual revenue share income streams that provide more time freedom and flexibility.

The best part? You don't have tenants. You don't have maintenance calls. You don't have repairs. You don't have vacancy issues.

You simply help good agents discover opportunities that can improve their businesses.

Why Some Agents Fail at eXp Realty

This may not be popular, but it's true.

Most agents who don't succeed at eXp never fully plug in.

They don't attend training. They don't engage with leadership. They don't leverage their upline. They don't ask for help. They don't utilize the resources available to them.

Then they conclude the brokerage doesn't work.

The opportunity is there. The question is whether you're willing to use it.

Advice for Agents Thinking About Leaving eXp Realty

Before making a decision, ask yourself:

Have I truly plugged into everything available? Have I attended the training? Have I connected with my upline? Have I asked for guidance? Have I explored team opportunities? Have I taken advantage of the systems already available?

Many times, the answer isn't leaving. The answer is getting more connected.

Why I'm Still Here Seven Years Later

Today, I have the privilege of being in partnership with more than 220 agents across 15+ states.

That responsibility is something I take seriously. Every one of those agents had choices. I'm honored they chose to partner with our organization.

Would I make the same decision again?

Abso-freaking-lutely.

The only thing I would change is joining sooner. I wish I had joined in 2017 when eXp Realty was first introduced to me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eXp Realty worth it for real estate agents in Texas?+

After 7 years at eXp Realty, including turning down a seven-figure offer to leave, my honest answer is yes, for the right agent. eXp offers an 80/20 split with a $16,000 flat cap, no franchise fees, stock ownership, and a revenue share model that creates income beyond commissions. Agents who plug into training, mentorship, and collaboration consistently outperform what they were doing at traditional brokerages.

How does eXp Realty compare to Keller Williams in DFW?+

At KW, the effective split is typically 64/36 after the 6% royalty fee, with caps ranging from $21,000–$30,000 depending on the market center. At eXp, every agent in North America is on the same 80/20 split with a flat $16,000 cap and zero franchise fees. On a $10M production year in DFW, that difference is roughly $8,000 more in your pocket at eXp, before revenue share.

What is the best eXp Realty sponsor in Texas?+

The right sponsor is someone actively building, producing, and willing to mentor you, not just a name on your onboarding paperwork. Nick Good is a 22-year DFW operator, Amazon best-selling author of Six Figure Agent, and currently in partnership with more than 220 agents across 15+ states through the Residual Agent Network.

What is eXp Realty revenue share and how does it work?+

When you help bring a producing agent into eXp, you earn a percentage of eXp's company dollar from that agent's transactions, not from the agent's commission. Their paycheck is identical. Your share arrives monthly, goes up to seven tiers deep, is willable to your family, and continues as long as you hold an active license, even if you stop selling.

Can eXp Realty stock be used to buy real estate?+

Yes, and I did exactly this. In 2024 I used accumulated eXp stock to purchase a property all cash in The Colony, Texas. That property has since appreciated roughly $80,000 and rents for approximately $2,400 per month. Stock awards at eXp include your first closing, capping, and the ICON award, creating real equity alongside your commission income.

Why do some agents fail at eXp Realty?+

The most common reason is never fully plugging in. eXp offers extensive training, broker support, masterminds, mentorship, and collaboration, but none of it is forced on you. Agents who don't engage with what's available often conclude the model doesn't work, when in reality the resources were there the entire time.
