← The Good Word

Most agents do not leave eXp because of the model. They leave because of the wrong sponsor, no community and no lead system. Here is the fix.

Why are agents leaving eXp Realty? Most of them are not leaving because of the model. They are leaving because they joined under the wrong sponsor, never found a real community, and never had a lead generation system that turned conversations into clients. I have been at eXp for seven years, and I see the same three gaps every time an agent tells me they are thinking about leaving.

Here is the context the headlines skip. eXp is not shrinking. AGNT, eXp's parent company, reported 87,338 agents as of June 30, 2026, up 6% from a year earlier, with transactions up 12%. Agents still leave, though. Every brokerage has attrition. The real question is why some eXp agents struggle while others build the best years of their careers on the same platform.

Reason 1: They Chose the Wrong Sponsor

This is the number one reason, and it is not close. At eXp, your sponsor is supposed to be your guide. In practice, a lot of agents get sponsored by someone who collected a signature and disappeared. No onboarding, no business plan, no one to call when a deal gets messy.

That is not an eXp problem. It is a sponsor problem. eXp gives every agent the same 80/20 split, the same $16,000 annual cap, and the same tools. What changes the outcome is who is standing next to you. A sponsor who still sells, still builds and still answers the phone is the difference between drowning and growing.

I have sponsored more than 220 agents into eXp Realty. I take that responsibility seriously because I have seen what happens when sponsors do not. If you are evaluating one, read my guide on how to pick an eXp Realty sponsor before you sign anything.

Reason 2: The Cloud Model Felt Lonely

eXp is a cloud brokerage. There is no office to walk into, no break room, no Tuesday team meeting by default. For agents coming from Keller Williams, RE/MAX or Coldwell Banker, that can feel isolating fast. I spent 12 years at Keller Williams, so I understand exactly what people miss.

The fix is not a building. It is a community. The agents I work with across Dallas-Fort Worth, from McKinney and Frisco to Plano and Allen, collaborate, share what is working and actually know each other's names. The cloud model works best when you have a local tribe on top of it.

Reason 3: No One Helped Them Generate or Convert Leads

eXp gives agents a lot of tools, including BoldTrail as the CRM, plus hundreds of hours of online training. For many agents, that is the problem. Too many options, no one showing them which three things actually matter. They log in, feel overwhelmed and go back to waiting for referrals.

Leads are not the hard part. Converting them is. That is why the agents who partner with me get a done-for-you lead generation system. We build their CRM automations and ad flow, then help them tweak the ads for performance and learn the follow-up that turns a lead into a client.

The results are real. Spencer Marshall closed $1.955M in volume from $500 in ads. Sharon Bicknell generated 51 leads at $2.46 each. Rammi Singh closed $3.75M in three months. You can see how the system works in my breakdown of done-for-you lead generation for DFW agents.

The Other Reasons Agents Leave

I want to be fair, because some reasons have nothing to do with sponsors.

Competing cloud brokerages. Real Brokerage, LPT Realty and others now offer similar cloud models and revenue share plans. Some teams move for a better short-term deal. That is a legitimate business decision, and I always tell agents to run the full numbers, not just compare splits.

Revenue share expectations. Some agents joined expecting passive income to show up on its own. It does not. eXp's own income disclosure shows most agents earn little or nothing from revenue share. It rewards years of consistent effort and real leadership.

The market. Higher rates and slower sales have squeezed low-producing agents across every brokerage, not just eXp. Some of those agents would have left the business anywhere.

I have been honest about eXp's downsides before, including why I left and came back. You can read that story in why I left eXp Realty and why I came back.

Should You Leave eXp Realty?

Maybe, but ask a better question first. If you leave, will your sponsor problem, your community problem and your lead problem follow you to the next brokerage? Usually they do. Switching logos does not fix a missing system. Before you move, find out whether the right support inside eXp would change your results. For a lot of agents in Texas, it does.

How to Make eXp Work: What to Look For in a Sponsor

If you are at eXp and frustrated, or thinking about joining, here is the checklist I would use:

1. An active operator. Your sponsor should still sell, build and lead. In 2025 my team closed 162 sides and $65.6M in volume. I teach what I use every day.

2. A real community. Weekly training, live calls and agents you can actually call for help on a Tuesday afternoon.

3. A lead system, not a login. CRM automations, an ad flow and help converting leads, not just a list of tools.

4. A written business plan. You should know your numbers for the next 90 days before your first week ends.

5. Multiple income streams. Revenue share, investing and business ownership, explained honestly with no hype.

Why Agents Partner With Me at eXp Realty

I am not looking for agents who just want a different brokerage. I am looking for motivated agents who want to build something bigger, and want the right people, systems, training, technology and community around them to do it.

If you are at another brokerage and wondering whether eXp can work for you, let's talk. If you are already at eXp, sponsor changes are restricted, but we can still talk through which support options fit your situation. I will tell you honestly whether partnering with me at eXp Realty makes sense for your business.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are agents leaving eXp Realty?+

Most agents who leave eXp joined under a sponsor who did not support them, never found a real community in the cloud model, or never had a lead generation and conversion system. Competing cloud brokerages, unrealistic revenue share expectations and a slower market also play a role.

Is eXp Realty losing agents in 2026?+

No. AGNT, eXp's parent company, reported 87,338 agents as of June 30, 2026, up 6% year over year. Individual agents still leave, as they do at every brokerage.

Does your eXp sponsor really matter?+

Yes. Every eXp agent gets the same split, cap and tools. The sponsor determines whether you get onboarding, a business plan, community and help generating and converting leads.

Can I change my eXp Realty sponsor?+

Sponsor changes at eXp are restricted, so choosing the right sponsor before you join matters. If you are already at eXp, ask about community and training options available to you.

What should I look for in an eXp Realty sponsor?+

Look for an active operator who still sells, a real community, a done-for-you lead generation system, a written business plan and honest guidance on revenue share and other income streams.
